Shivkumar Sharma

ANTAR MUKHI

Episode three in our profiles series explores the music of Shivkumar Sharma, who’s success as a musician is measured by his synonymity with his instrument; When we hear Santoor, we think of ShivJi.

Inspired by the sounds of his birthplace, Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma’s journey in music has been a fruitful but arduous one, having single-handedly established the Santoor on the classical platform in one lifetime.

In this mix, Shivkumar discusses his philosophy on music, the innate nature of sur and laya, and how becoming ‘antar mukhi’, or turning the attention inwards is necessary for a musician to truly perceive sound and rhythm.

Featuring;
Ragas Kaunsi Kanada, Kirwani, Hamsadhwani, Jhinjhoti and Khamaj.

India’s Classical Masters is a ten-part series in partnership with The Vinyl Factory.
